Initial Consultation

You have taken the first step and scheduled a legal consultation with a divorce lawyer. What is next? Before your appointment, take a look at any email communication from the lawyer or law firm to see if they have requested specific documentation. If this is your initial consultation, you may not need to bring all of your materials, but it's helpful to review any relevant documents in advance so that you can provide answers to any questions that may arise during the consultation.

When discussing family law matters, it is important to have a clear understanding of your financial situation. Make sure to gather all of your financial records, including any documents from your accountant or the Canada Revenue Agency, if necessary. Having these documents on hand can provide valuable insights and make the consultation more productive.

If you have any prior legal documents related to your case, such as agreements, endsorements or settlements, bring them to the consultation. Your lawyer can review these materials with you and gain a better understanding of what lies ahead.

If you are unsure of what to bring, do not hesitate to reach out to the lawyer or law firm you have contacted to clarify their expectations. The more information and resources you bring to the consultation, the better equipped your lawyer will be to provide the guidance and support you need.
